Assistant Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno

The Department of World Languages & Literatures at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in French. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

The successful candidate will contribute to our undergraduate and master’s programs in French as well as the Basic French Language Program. We seek a scholar with expertise in any area of French-language literary studies, or with a French-language specialization in Cultural Studies, Media Studies, or Digital Humanities; primary consideration will be given to scholars with demonstrated familiarity with the Digital Humanities.

The position will involve teaching courses in French language, literature, and culture at all levels, including Basic French Language classes, and will also be expected to develop and teach courses that integrate Digital Humanities approaches into the discipline. Candidates will have an established or clearly developing research agenda and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest level while giving evidence of, or showing strong potential to, attract external grant funding.

In addition to teaching and research, the successful candidate will hold service responsibilities and actively contribute to advising, recruitment, and extracurricular programming in French, helping to build and sustain a vibrant intellectual and cultural community for our students. Tenure-track faculty who teach at the master’s level have a 3/3 teaching load. Assistant Professor of French at Transylvania University

Job Responsibilities

We seek a dynamic colleague in any field of specialization within French/Francophone Studies who will contribute to the growth and vitality of French at Transylvania. Transylvania University is known for a culture of excellence in teaching, so the successful candidate should have a strong interest in teaching in a liberal arts setting. The successful candidate will teach all levels of French language as well as advanced-level courses in the candidate’s area of specialization. In addition to occasional contributions to first-year programming and service as an academic adviser, there are opportunities to collaborate across disciplines while working closely with Africana Studies, Film Studies, Medical Humanities, etc. The teaching load consists of three courses per term, plus one short-term course in May (3-3-1) that offers additional opportunities for travel courses, team-taught courses and other more experimental classroom endeavors. Other responsibilities include scholarship/professional activity and service to the university through various committee appointments. The university also has an excellent faculty development program that competitively funds faculty (and student) scholarly research and artistic projects.

 

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in French or related field is required by the start date. The successful candidate will have native or near-native fluency in French and English, a commitment to teaching and student engagement, an active research agenda in the field of specialization, and interest in working collaboratively across disciplines within a liberal arts environment.

Visiting Assistant Professor of French at Allegheny College

Early Career Lecturer in Early Modern French (St. John's College UK)

St. John’s College invites applications for a fixed-term 1.0 FTE Early Career Lectureship in Early Modern French. The aim of this post is to offer the individual postholder career development and integration with the academic life of the subject in College and in Oxford. The appointment is available for the period 1st October 2025 – 30th September 2029 and will not be extended or renewed.

St John’s admits around five to seven undergraduates in French each year to read the four-year Modern Languages course, including joint schools involving Classics, Modern History, English, Philosophy and Middle Eastern Languages.

The successful candidate will join a vigorous Modern Languages team in the College including Official Fellows in French (Prof. Nikolaj Lübecker) and German (Professor Barry Murnane), Specialist Language Teachers in French and German, College Lecturers in French Linguistics, Russian, Spanish, Italian and German. The post offers the opportunity to develop skills in research, teaching and academic administration in a supportive environment.

The successful candidate will be required: to provide up to an average of 8 hours of teaching (tutorials and classes) during each week of full term, as directed by the Senior Tutor and Tutor in French. Candidates must be able to teach the Early Modern Literature (1530-1800) paper (Paper VII) and the pre-nineteenth century part of the Modern Literature (1715 to the present) paper (Paper VIII) together with appropriate Prescribed Authors (Paper X). They will also be expected to teach the pre-nineteenth century part of the first-year literature syllabus and French to English translation (see prelims and FHS handbooks).

The salary will be 1.0 FTE paid at the equivalent of University grade 7.1 currently £38,674 per annum including a pensionable Oxford University Weighting payment which will be paid in equal monthly instalments and pro-rated for part time appointments.

There is a teaching and research allowance of £1500 P.A during the period of appointment. There is also an annual entertainment allowance of £358.

Visiting Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies at Williams College

The Department of Romance Languages at Williams College seeks to fill a year-long visiting faculty position in French and Francophone Studies for 2025-2026 to teach 5 courses; 2 sections of intermediate French in Fall 2025 (French 103), and then 2 sections of the next level of intermediate French (French 104), as well as 1 advanced literature/culture course (in the candidate’s specialty) in Spring 2026. Specialization open, but preference given to pre-19th century. Ph.D. is preferred; native or near-native proficiency in French is required. A passion for teaching both language and literature/culture is essential, as is a desire to work effectively with a broadly diverse student population. The successful candidate must have significant previous intermediate-level language teaching experience and innovative ideas for an advanced-level literature/culture course (in the candidate’s specialty) in French.

We provide visiting faculty with mentoring in teaching, including participation in the college’s professional development program for new faculty (First3) and support through the Rice Center for Teaching. Visiting Assistant Professor of French at the University of Rochester

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC) at the University of Rochester is seeking applicants for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of French for a two-year, non-renewable term. The candidate’s area(s) of specialization should cover any period(s) of French literature and culture from the Renaissance through the 18th century.

Teaching load is 2/2. Candidates must have a PhD in hand or expected by the time of appointment (July 1, 2025) and must possess native or near-native proficiency in French. If ABD, a dissertation defense date must be provided.  Any candidate with a defense date after July 1, 2025 would be hired as an Instructor rather than as a Visiting Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will teach one advanced (fourth semester) French language course, survey courses on French literature and culture, as well as courses in their areas of specialization.

Salary range: $54,000-$65,000. The referenced pay range represents the full base range of pay for this job. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on market data, experience and expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Lecturer in Pre-1800 French and Francophone Studies at Harvard University

Position Description:  The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures seeks applications for a lecturer in pre-1800 French and Francophone Studies (medieval and/or early modern). The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2025. The lecturer will be responsible for teaching four courses in French in the academic year, two per semester, at the 70, 80, and 100 levels (i.e. introductory literature and culture courses to advanced seminars) and advising students as is appropriate. While no particular area of specialization is sought, intersections with any of the French section’s existing strengths in material culture, gender and sexuality, environmental humanities, and postcolonial studies are desirable.

 

The position is for one year (July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026).

 

Basic Qualifications:  Doctorate in French or related discipline required by the time the appointment begins.

Visiting Assistant Professor — University of Pittsburgh
Assistant Professor of Early Modern French Theater and Performance (1500-1800) at Yale University

The Yale University Department of French intends to appoint a tenure-track assistant professor in Early Modern  French Theater and Performance (1500-1800) to begin on July 1, 2025. Applicants will be affiliated with the Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) Program, although the position would be fully in the French Department.

Beyond traditional text-based approaches, the candidate must be able to think at the intersection of disciplines. Their research will be situated within the framework of an archaeology of media and of visual culture(s), underscoring the link of theater with other forms of performance (such as dance, ballet, mime and opera), and emphasizing political, anthropological, sociological, economical, philosophical or gender/identity issues. Feminist, queer, and decolonial approaches are welcome. Fields of research may also include the history of performance criticism, the material conditions of performance and its impact on the spectator's body and mind, or methodological questions.

Applicants should have strong potential for excellence and achievement in scholarship and in undergraduate and graduate teaching. They must have expertise in canonical texts as well as lesser-known ones, which radically renew the canon. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in their area of specialty and in broader areas (like history of theater), meeting the needs of the Program and the Department. Applicants should have native or near-native fluency in French.
